Mike Hesson, former Director of Cricket at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), has sparked debate by questioning the franchise’s IPL 2024 auction strategy, particularly their acquisitions of Cameron Green and Pat Cummins. While the auction witnessed record-breaking bids and intriguing moves, Hesson believes RCB’s approach significantly impacted their plans and might not have yielded the best results.

Green’s High Price & Disrupted Strategy:

Hesson expressed doubt about the hefty ₹17.50 crore spent on acquiring Green from Mumbai Indians. “Cam Green is a fine player,” he acknowledged, “but his buy made a huge difference to their auction strategy.” He believes this disrupted RCB’s ability to acquire other crucial players within their budget.

Hesson further criticized RCB’s pursuit of Pat Cummins, questioning the logic behind bidding up to ₹20.25 crore for the Australian star. He believes this move revealed their maximum spending limit, allowing other teams to strategize accordingly.

“I never would have bid for Pat Cummins to that level,” he stated. “You basically show your hand and the other teams know your limit.” He suggests this limited RCB’s flexibility in acquiring other targets.

Understanding the Pressure, but Was It Worth It?

Hesson acknowledged the pressure on RCB to avoid ending up with no major signings, which contributed to their aggressive bids. However, he questions whether the potential benefits outweigh the downsides. “That’s the issue when you buy Cameron Green for ₹17 crore,” he commented.

With these hefty investments, Green now carries the weight of high expectations. His previous season with Mumbai Indians showcased his potential, but replicating it with RCB under immense pressure will be a significant challenge.

Only time will tell whether RCB’s gamble on Green and their bidding strategy for Cummins will pay off. The upcoming season will be a crucial test for their acquisitions and overall approach. Hesson’s remarks have ignited discussions and highlighted the complexities of navigating the high-stakes world of IPL auctions.
