“Kya waqei mein Ruturaj captaincy kar rahe hain?”: Virender Sehwag takes a cheeky dig at Ruturaj Gaikwad

During the IPL 2024 season opener between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag injected a moment of humor into the commentary box. Sehwag, alongside Suresh Raina and Aakash Chopra, playfully questioned who the real captain of CSK was during the match against RCB, leading to a light-hearted exchange.

CSK emerged victorious in their IPL 2024 opener against RCB, winning by six wickets. Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja played crucial roles, guiding CSK to a successful chase. Reflecting on his debut as IPL captain, Gaikwad expressed that having Dhoni in the team alleviated any additional pressure and that he enjoyed the experience of leading the side.

The banter occurred during the 13th over of the match, with Raina praising Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s captaincy for making the right bowling changes and implementing a successful strategy. Sehwag interrupted, asking, “Kya waqei mein Ruturaj captaincy kar rahe hain?” (Is Ruturaj actually captaining today?).

Raina explained that while MS Dhoni was keeping wickets, the fielding changes were being made by Gaikwad. Sehwag, however, cheekily pointed out that most of the on-field decisions seemed to be coming from Dhoni, not Gaikwad.

The broadcasters then showed clips of Dhoni actively setting the field during RCB’s innings, leading to laughter in the commentary box. Raina, in response, jokingly conceded, “Well, it seems like he (Dhoni) is captaining.”

Earlier in the match, Ravi Shastri had asked Gaikwad about stepping into Dhoni’s shoes as captain. Gaikwad, however, expressed that he was not looking to fill Dhoni’s shoes but rather aiming to bring his own style of leadership.
