In a strategic twist that left cricket fans in awe, Virat Kohli, one of India’s ace batters, has taken on the role of an opener in the third ODI against Australia. This daring decision came in the wake of adversity as Ishan Kishan’s unavailability due to a viral infection forced the Indian team to improvise their batting order.

Kohli’s Stint as an Opener:

While Virat Kohli is renowned for his batting prowess at the No. 3 position in ODIs, his maiden appearance for the Indian national team was as an opening batter back in 2008. Despite a modest start, Kohli quickly found his rhythm and even notched up a maiden fifty during his early innings as an opener. Over the years, he has amassed 166 runs in seven matches as an opening batter in ODIs, showcasing his adaptability.

Kohli’s next venture as an opening batsman came in 2014 when India faced New Zealand at Seddon Park. This move, although unconventional at the time, demonstrated Kohli’s willingness to adapt to team needs and circumstances.

Recent Foray into Opening:

The most recent instance of Kohli donning the opening role occurred in December 2022 when Rohit Sharma suffered a thumb injury during a match against Bangladesh. With the team’s back against the wall, Kohli opened alongside Shikhar Dhawan. Despite the challenges, this strategic move highlighted Kohli’s commitment to his team’s cause, even if it meant stepping out of his comfort zone.

However, Kohli’s last stint as an opener was not without challenges. In the must-win game against Bangladesh in 2022, he was dismissed early, scoring just five runs off six deliveries. Despite a heroic half-century by an injured Rohit Sharma down the order, India narrowly lost the match by five runs. This turn of events underlined the risks associated with reshuffling the batting order.
