The Australian cricket team has etched its name deeper into cricket history, becoming only the second team in the world to play 1000 One-Day Internationals (ODIs). This momentous occasion takes place in the final match of their three-match ODI series against West Indies at Manuka Oval, Canberra.

Dominant Aussies Eye Clean Sweep

Australia boasts an impressive record in their 999 previous ODIs, with 608 wins, the most by any team. However, they’ve also registered 348 losses, and 9 ties and have seen 34 games ending in no results. They currently lead the series against West Indies 2-0 after convincing victories in Melbourne and Sydney. Steve Smith takes the reins for this historic match, captaining in the absence of rested skipper Pat Cummins.

Smith opted for fresh faces in the bowling attack, bringing back quicks Xavier Bartlett and Lance Morris. Bartlett impressed on his debut in Melbourne, claiming four wickets, and will look to replicate his performance in potentially helpful seaming conditions.

“Not sure how the wicket will play, it might get better under lights,” Smith said after winning the toss. “That’s pretty much the reason for two changes. Short is out with a hamstring and Hazlewood didn’t make the trip. Bartlett and Lance Morris are back in.”

India Leads the Pack, Pakistan Next in Line

India remains the only other team to have surpassed 1000 ODIs, currently sitting at 1055 matches played. Pakistan follows closely behind at number three with 970 ODIs, just 30 away from their own milestone.

Australia’s 1000th ODI marks a significant achievement in cricketing history. It’s a testament to the team’s enduring legacy and a chance to celebrate the countless players, coaches, and fans who have contributed to this journey. As the match unfolds, all eyes will be on the Aussies as they aim to seal a clean sweep against West Indies and add another chapter to their already remarkable ODI story.
