In a remarkable display of batting prowess, Virat Kohli, the former Indian cricket team captain, achieved a historic milestone during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 match against New Zealand in Dharamshala. He became the first cricketer in history to accumulate 3,000 runs in ICC white-ball tournaments, surpassing West Indies legend Chris Gayle‘s previous record of 2,942 runs in both ODI and T20I ICC tournaments.
Kohli’s stellar performance was instrumental in leading India’s chase of 274 runs at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala. The 34-year-old right-handed batsman, with his 69th ODI half-century, played a match-winning innings of 95 runs from 104 balls, guiding India to a remarkable four-wicket victory over New Zealand.
In the process, Kohli also overtook his fellow teammate and Men in Blue’s captain, Rohit Sharma, to become the highest run-scorer in the prestigious ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Kohli’s consistent and remarkable form throughout the tournament was evident, with a century and three half-centuries to his name.
Rohit Sharma, the Indian opener, also etched his name in the record books during this match by becoming the first Indian cricketer to hit 300 runs in the same mega event. Kohli later joined the list and went on to eclipse Rohit’s record.
Kohli’s performance in this edition of the World Cup highlights his exceptional skills as a chase master, making him a formidable force on the field. He has consistently displayed his ability to anchor the innings and play match-winning knocks.
Furthermore, Rohit Sharma, who has been a prolific run-scorer in ODIs for India, achieved a milestone of his own by becoming the first Indian cricketer to smash 50 ODI sixes in a single calendar year, adding to India’s rich cricketing legacy.
While these individual achievements are notable, it is the collective strength of the Indian cricket team that has been a defining factor in their journey in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
