SWOT Analysis of Sri Lanka Squad for World Cup 2023

Sri Lanka is set to participate in the 2023 ODI World Cup starting on October 5, but they enter the tournament as underdogs despite their impressive performance in the last 15 ODIs. They are considered one of the favorites due to their recent record, and their performance as runners-up in the Asia Cup 2023 showcased their potential even without some star players.

In the 2019 World Cup, Sri Lanka finished sixth with three wins, four losses, and two no results. Notably, veterans Lasith Malinga and Angelo Mathews played their last World Cup, contributing to the team’s commendable performance. Sri Lanka secured victories against England, Afghanistan, and West Indies.

However, their World Cup hopes are currently marred by multiple injuries plaguing the team just before the tournament. Despite being underdogs, Sri Lanka’s recent form and past achievements suggest they could be a force to reckon with in the 2023 ODI World Cup, hosted by India.

Strengths:

Spin All-Rounder:

Sri Lanka benefits from having a versatile spin all-rounder in Dhananjay De Silva, Aslanka, and Wellalage. He contributes with both bat and ball, adding depth to the team’s resources. Theekshana’s ability to spin the ball and provide valuable runs lower down the order is a significant asset.

Talented Batsmen in Asian Conditions:

Sri Lanka boasts a lineup of talented batsmen who can make substantial contributions. Players like Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, and Dhananjaya De Silva have proven themselves as capable run-scorers in international cricket. Their ability to anchor the innings and accelerate when needed is vital for Sri Lanka’s success.

Young Talent:

The emergence of young talents like Dunith Wellalage, Pathirana, Theekshana adds excitement to Sri Lanka’s squad. Wellalage’s impressive performances in the Asia Cup 2023 have showcased his potential as a dynamic all-rounder. His energy and adaptability can provide a valuable dimension to the team.

Weaknesses:

Injuries:

Sri Lanka’s most significant weakness is the injury concerns plaguing the team. The absence of star player Wanindu Hasaranga, who excelled with both bat and ball, is a substantial setback. Injuries to key players can disrupt the team’s balance and strategy.

Fast Bowling Attack:

Sri Lanka possesses a formidable spin bowling attack, which is one of their primary strengths. However, their pace battery includes talents like Matheesha Pathirana and Lahiru Kumara injury prone and are inconsistent with their line and lengths. This pace duo has the potential to dismantle opposition batting line-ups.

In summary, Sri Lanka’s strengths revolve around their bowling attack, spin all-rounder, talented batsmen, and the emergence of young talent. However, the injury-related weaknesses pose a significant challenge for the team in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
