In a pretty one sided contest against arch-rivals Pakistan during the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023, Shubman Gill showcased remarkable resilience and determination. His journey from recovery of dengue to opening the batting for India was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the team’s cause.
The day before the high-stakes match, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma had expressed that Gill was “99 percent” ready to play despite his recent illness. This statement, however, left a small margin for the possibility of unforeseen complications or a fever relapse on the match day.
The primary concern revolved around Gill’s physical endurance. It was vital to ensure that he could withstand the rigors of fielding for 100 overs. Another challenge was the limited time available for preparation, as Gill had only two days, Thursday and Friday, before the Saturday game. Despite these challenges, Gill’s performance in the nets had instilled optimism within the team management.
The final decision on Gill’s participation was made at the ground on the day of the match, indicating the cautious approach adopted by the team management. It was clear that they were cautiously optimistic about his availability.
Gill’s recovery was facilitated by the exceptional care he received at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai, where he spent a night. His room was converted into a temporary dispensary, with a dedicated nurse providing round-the-clock care. A nutritious diet, featuring energy-rich papaya, was provided to aid in his recovery. Dr. Sivarama Kannan, who oversaw Gill’s swift recuperation, played a pivotal role in this process.
Gill’s platelet count became a crucial parameter of his recovery. When it dropped to a concerning level of 50,000-60,000, he was admitted to the hospital. However, the subsequent days witnessed a steady rise in his platelet count. By the time it exceeded 100,000, Dr. Kannan deemed him fit to travel.
In the game against Pakistan, Gill, although scoring only 16 runs from 11 balls, showcased exceptional resilience. He fielded for the entire duration of Pakistan’s innings, which lasted for 42.5 overs, without any signs of discomfort. Gill’s determination to take the field in a high-pressure match serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to the Indian team, further solidifying his reputation as a dedicated and talented cricketer.
