In the midst of Pakistan’s top-order struggles in the 2023 World Cup, Mohammad Rizwan, the right-handed batter and wicketkeeper, has come to their defence. Despite recent difficulties faced by Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, and Babar Azam, Rizwan emphasised that Pakistan became the No. 1 ODI team largely due to the performance of their top three batters.
Rizwan acknowledged the scrutiny faced by the top-order, especially Fakhar Zaman, who has passed 30 only once in his last seven innings. Imam-ul-Haq has been consistent with his runs but struggled with his strike rate, while Babar Azam has faced challenges in scoring big.
Following Pakistan’s 81-run victory over the Netherlands on Friday, Rizwan spoke to PTI and highlighted the opportunity for the middle-order to step up and contribute to the team’s success. He stated, “Yes, it’s a good question. But you also have to understand, the last two years, the reason for us becoming No. 1 was our top three. Just before the Asia Cup, Fakhar Zaman was named the ICC Player of the Month. Before that, Imam had hundreds upon hundreds. We think this is an opportunity for the middle order to showcase its form. And now the middle order is also performing.”
In the recent match against the Netherlands, Pakistan’s top three batters were dismissed within 10 overs, placing significant pressure on the team. However, the partnership of 120 runs between Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan played a crucial role in guiding Pakistan to a winning total of 286.
Rizwan also commended the performance of Pakistan’s fast bowler, Haris Rauf, against the Dutch team and expressed his belief that Saud Shakeel has the potential to become a future cricket superstar. He added, “You saw today, how Haris Rauf was breathing fire and hitting some late seam movement. So we have to train specific to conditions. If Saud maintains the hard work he’s doing, then Pakistan will have found themselves another superstar.”
Rizwan also shared his appreciation for the warm reception and support received by the Pakistan team from Indian fans, expressing that they feel at home while playing in India. He mentioned that they look forward to continuing their journey and experiencing the love and support of fans in other Indian cities.
With Rizwan’s confidence in Pakistan’s top-order and the middle-order’s recent performances, the team aims to build on their success in the 2023 World Cup and make a strong statement in the tournament.
