In a significant move for Indian domestic cricket, seasoned all-rounder Baba Aparajith has confirmed that he will be joining the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) for the upcoming domestic season. This decision comes after discussions with both the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and KCA, with only the remaining final formalities for signing the contract.
“I was approached and the talks began around mid-June. I also took my time to decide. I thought about my role with the Kerala team, what the challenges will be, how I’ll be able to contribute,” Aparajith stated. “I wanted to play all three formats. That was an important consideration. So, when I made the decision and informed TNCA, they were also kind enough and said it’s okay for me to make the switch.”
Excitement for New Challenges
Aparajith expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter in his career, highlighting Kerala’s growth in domestic cricket. “I think Kerala has been doing well. They are also coming up, have been growing year after year. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the association (KCA),” he said. “For me as an individual, it’ll be a different challenge. I’m excited for the new challenge and really looking forward to having a good season.”
Having played extensively with many of the players in the Kerala squad, Aparajith feels well-prepared to integrate into the team. “I know all the players very well. I’ve played a lot with all of them. Be it players or officials, I have a good rapport with all of them,” he added.
Gratitude Towards Tamil Nadu Cricket Association
Reflecting on his time with Tamil Nadu, Aparajith conveyed heartfelt gratitude towards the TNCA for their support throughout his career. “My big thanks for TNCA because they’ve supported me a lot for my growth and development. I will always have a special feeling for Tamil Nadu,” he remarked.
Aparajith has a rich history with Tamil Nadu cricket, having captained the state side during his U-13 and U-15 days and played over 250 domestic matches across all formats. “Even when I played for India U-19, I represented Tamil Nadu. Everything was through the association (TNCA). So, I’ll have a special bond and feeling,” he stated.
Potential Leadership Role in Kerala
Kerala’s coach, Venkataramana, who played a pivotal role in bringing Aparajith to the team, believes that his experience could be invaluable. Venkataramana noted that with the aging Jalaj Saxena, there was a need for fresh talent, and he suggested Aparajith as a potential leader in the absence of Sanju Samson.
“I projected him saying that if Sanju is not available, they’ll have a very potential candidate to lead the side,” Venkataramana explained.
As Kerala looks to strengthen its squad for the upcoming season, Aparajith’s addition is anticipated to bolster the team’s performance in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic competitions. With his experience and skills, he aims to make a significant impact and contribute to Kerala’s aspirations in the domestic circuit.
