Zimbabwe’s Australia Tour Postponed Due to COVID

Due to the ongoing pandemic worldwide, the ODI series between Australia and Zimbabwe was postponed on Tuesday. Reportedly two respective boards came into a mutual agreement to take the final call.

Australia not suitable to host game

The three-match One-day series was scheduled to be hosted by Australia. But the current situation in Australia is a bit scary as the country is experiencing a fresh wave of the COVID-19 cases. The country had recorded more than 7500 positive coronavirus cases so far with the death toll more than 103. So in a such a worrying scenario, the boards decided to postpone the series for the sake of public health and safety. Cricket Australia said, it came as a mutual conclusion between two boards and due to a combination of factors, “…including the short length of the series, the significant bio-security measures that would need to be implemented prior to August, and concern for the health and safety of players, match officials, and volunteers.”

Board officials speak

Cricket Australia interim chief Nick Hockley said, “While we are disappointed to postpone the series, CA and Zimbabwe Cricket agree that in the best interest of players, match officials, volunteers as well as our fans, that this is the most practical and sensible decision.” He also added, “We are committed to working with Zimbabwe Cricket on alternative dates to reschedule.”

Zimbabwe have not visited Down Under since the 2003-04. Their last ODI meeting saw Zimbabwe winning a tri-series in 2014 played in Harare. So no wonder they were excited to visit Australia. But Zimbabwe Cricket’s managing director Givemore Makoni explained, “We were excited about facing Australia but, given the circumstances, deferring the tour was the only possible option.” He further added that as soon as possible they boards would try to reschedule the series depending on the situation. “We are, however, looking forward to the rescheduling of the series as soon as practically possible.”
