WPL 2023 Orange Cap: Shafali’s whirlwind knock makes massive changes in the list

There’s no stopping Meg Lanning in this tournament. She is leading the orange cap list of the inaugural edition of the Women’s IPL 2023 with 179 runs. Today, again she scored an unbeaten 21* off just 15 balls and has stayed at the top with a score of 206 runs in the tournament.

In today’s match against Gujarat Capitals, Lanning did not have much of the scoring to do due to her opening partner Shafali Verma. After a string of low scores, the Indian opener played a once-in-a-tournament inning scoring runs for fun. Shafali Verma put on a Shafali performance, hitting five sixes and ten fours en route to the second-fastest fifty in the WPL, helping the Caps finish their chase in just seven overs. Shafali’s undefeated 76 runs in 28 balls came off a remarkable 271.43 strike rate. Due to this inning, she is now the second most leading run scorer in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League.

Healy Matthews dropped down to the third position as Shafali rose to the second position. The West Indian, who was purchased for the basic price, smashed a 31-ball 47 in the game’s opening innings before scoring a quickfire 67 against RCB. She hasn’t turned around since and never will. Her colleague Nat Sciver-Brunt, who has 101 runs under her belt, is ninth on the list.

For her 52 runs yesterday, Ellyse Perry performed brilliantly, keeping the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the game. In the list of the top run scorers, she moved up to the fourth place. Nevertheless, she fell to sixth place today. In her team’s defeat against Delhi, Tahlia McGrath recorded the highest score of the competition with an unbroken 90. Healy, though, smashed her old mark today with an unbeatable 96. Healy is in seventh place, while Tahila is in position 9.
