World Test Championship: Can Indian National Cricket Team Reach Final?

International Cricket Council will take a call on the inaugural edition of ICC World Test Championship this week. In their quarterly meeting of the year that began on Monday, ICC board members will decide on the tournament which has been affected by Covid-19.

What to decide

According to the ESPNcricinfo report, the cricket committee of ICC proposed to consider the percentage of points earned from the contested matches to decide the finalists of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship. ICC board meeting will take place on Wednesday and Thursday to decide the fate of the same. According to the original format of the Championship, each of nine top-ranked teams will play six series over two years. Each series will have a maximum of 120 points irrespective of the number of matches. India and Pakistan will not face each other as each team has picked their opponents by mutual agreement. The top two teams on the ICC World test championship points table will meet for the final at Lord’s on June, 2021.

Chance of Indian Cricket Team

If ICC goes ahead with the proposed points system Indian cricket team will end up getting 480 points and 66.67 percent if they lose all four Tests against Australia and win five against England. In case they lose to Australia 3-1 and win all against England, they will have 510 points and 70.83 percent. This will be marginally ahead of New Zealand’s maximum possible score. If they lose to Australia 2-0 and win 5-0 against England, this will give the Indian cricket team 500 points and 69.66 percent. This would not make India’s chances very high going ahead. However, India is currently topping the points table followed by Australia (296 points) and England (292 points).

On the other hand, likely, New Zealand can attain a maximum of 420 points as of now which is 70 percent if they can manage to win home series against West Indies and Pakistan. This will give a fair chance to make it to the finale of the tournament.
