Cricket enthusiasts in the United States have a reason to cheer as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled exciting plans for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies. The ICC’s latest announcement includes a remarkable 34,000-seater pop-up facility, which is set to become one of the tournament’s primary venues.
Eisenhower Park: The New Cricketing Hub
The spotlight now shines on Eisenhower Park, a sprawling 930-acre expanse nestled in East Meadow, Long Island, approximately 30 miles east of Manhattan. This picturesque location will soon play host to cricketing action on an unprecedented scale. Among the many fixtures scheduled at this venue, one stands out prominently – the marquee clash between cricketing giants India and Pakistan.
The revelation of Eisenhower Park as a tournament venue comes following the breakdown of talks between the ICC and New York City officials regarding the construction of a similar pop-up venue in Van Cortlandt Park, located in the Bronx. Local resistance and concerns from residents and a cricket league operating within the park compelled the city officials to abandon their plans.
In a swift and strategic move, the ICC turned its attention to Nassau County, securing negotiations with Eisenhower Park administrators. This transition marks a significant shift in location, but it is undoubtedly a gain for Nassau County and cricket enthusiasts in the region.
Cricket’s Ascent in the USA
The decision to host a portion of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA underscores the ICC’s efforts to promote cricket in the country. The USA boasts the world’s largest media market, and it represents one of the fastest-emerging cricket markets globally. Media rights for ICC events in the USA are among the top four in terms of dollar value.
However, the lack of adequate cricketing infrastructure in the USA has been a persistent concern for the ICC. While Major League Cricket (MLC) introduced a 15,000-seater flagship stadium in Dallas for its inaugural season and Central Broward Park near Miami is another existing facility, a permanent, state-of-the-art cricket structure has remained a priority.
Future of Cricket in USA
The agreement with Eisenhower Park is set to address many of the ICC’s venue-related challenges in the USA. The ICC has allocated approximately 20 games to the USA, with these matches likely to be distributed among the three facilities: Eisenhower Park, Central Broward Park, and the Church Street Park in Morrisville, North Carolina, which is also under consideration.
While the Church Street Park may lack permanent structures or practice facilities, the newly-constructed venue at Eisenhower Park is expected to fill this void, providing a world-class stage for international cricket.
The ICC had previously announced that the 2024 T20 World Cup would kick off on June 4 and conclude on June 30. With the second edition of Major League Cricket tentatively scheduled for July, there is potential for the MLC to leverage the newly-established infrastructure at Eisenhower Park, potentially making it the new temporary home for the MI New York franchise.
