Bangladesh Cricket Board Freezes Shakib Al Hasan’s Payments Amid Legal and Political Controversy, Dhaka, March 4, 2025 – Bangladesh cricket has been rocked by a shocking revelation as Shakib Al Hasan’s salary for four months remains unpaid despite being a centrally contracted player. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that the payments were withheld due to his frozen bank accounts, raising questions about his financial and legal standing.
This development comes at a time when Shakib is transitioning away from international cricket, having announced his retirement from T20Is and Tests. His involvement in politics and legal controversies has further complicated matters, adding to the speculation surrounding his withheld earnings.
BCB recently announced salary increments for centrally contracted players on March 3, 2025, but despite the pay hikes, Shakib’s outstanding salary for September, October, November, and December was still pending.
BCB officials later clarified the reason behind the non-payment, stating that Shakib’s bank accounts had been frozen, preventing them from processing the salary payments.
“It’s true that Shakib has not received his salary for four months, and this is because his bank accounts have been frozen,” a BCB official confirmed.
Reports suggest that Shakib was due to receive BDT 48 lakhs (approx. USD 38,400 or INR 33 lakhs before taxes), a significant sum that remains unpaid.
Shakib Al Hasan is no stranger to controversy, but his recent political involvement has escalated matters.
The 37-year-old all-rounder is currently serving as a member of parliament for Magura under the ruling Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government. However, his entry into politics has been anything but smooth.
Shakib’s name was listed in an FIR (First Information Report) in connection with an alleged murder during the political unrest that followed the government’s resignation after 15 years in power. Despite this, the BCB allowed him to continue playing, stating that unless he is proven guilty, he remains eligible for selection.
His decision to enter politics has drawn mixed reactions from the cricketing fraternity and the public, with many questioning whether he can balance both roles effectively.
Despite the ongoing controversy, BCB cricket operations chairman Nazmul Hassan has assured that Shakib will receive his dues as per his contract agreement.
“He will get his salary as per the agreement because whether you play or not, there is an agreement in place, and we will fulfill our commitment,” Nazmul stated.
While this statement offers some reassurance, the timeline for Shakib’s payment remains unclear, as it is directly tied to the legal status of his frozen accounts.
After stepping away from T20Is and Tests, Shakib was set to play his farewell match at home against South Africa, but security concerns prevented the game from taking place.
Now, with his cricketing career nearing its end and political ambitions taking center stage, questions remain over how his legacy will be remembered—as one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers or a player whose off-field controversies overshadowed his achievements.
With the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025 and the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, all eyes are on whether Shakib will return to domestic cricket or fully transition into politics.
For now, Bangladesh cricket fans and analysts will closely monitor whether Shakib can resolve his financial and legal troubles while maintaining his stature as a cricketing icon.
