What Does ECB Rotation Policy Mean for IPL?

England Cricket Board embraced an IPL policy that might not please everyone. But in the present scenario, they probably do not have any alternative. While asked about the same the head coach of England cricket, Chris Silverwood spoke about the rotation policy and asked fans to understand.

England Coach speaks on rotation policy

Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, and Jonny Bairstow were not part of the series in Sri Lanka. Even in India, England opted to rest Jonny Bairstow and Sam Curran for the first two Tests against India. While asked about the resting and rotating policy, the coach said, “I’m perfectly happy with the system we’re using at the moment. I stand by it. We’ve got to look after our people. We’re spending a lot of time locked in hotel rooms inside bio-secure bubbles and it’s not easy.”

He also requested fans to understand the same. “We’re resting in the best interests of the players and to get the best out of them long-term. We’ve decided to rest and rotate; we’ve decided we need to look after the players,” said Silverwood. “I do believe we have to be proactive in looking after them, rather than wait until there’s a problem. I’d just ask supporters to understand why we do what we do.”

Preference to IPL

But what is there to understand exactly? It is clear that the England Cricket Board decided to go with the best interest of the players. They are clearly giving preference to IPL participation which is why the players are being rested during international assignments. England cricket authorities are keen to manage the workload of their players in a year that will see them play at least 17 Tests and attempt to win the T20 World Cup. The rotation policy thus will also help the players to play IPL 2021 which is happening in a gap of five months from the last edition.
While there are numerous benefits of playing IPL, which include financial rewards and the opportunity to play with some of the biggest names, it has its drawbacks too. the league is played during England county season. It also forces the board to manage its international schedule. But what’s the best alternative that will help players take part in IPL and not harm any other opportunity for them? That’s the ECB needs to find out.
