Warner ready to take extra responsibility in absence of Smith

Although Steve Smith is unavailable in the third Test of Ashes 2019, David Warner is ready to fill the “unfillable shoes” of Smith in Leeds. On the eve of the Third encounter, Australian team management backed their most prolific batsman as they are aiming for claiming the Ashes.

What colleagues say

Smith’s Test return after a year-long ban was an example of pure class and run-fest. Contrast to that, Warner’s one had been a nightmare. Although he had a great show in the World Cup 2019, Ashes is yet to become a good experience for him this time. Justin Langer talking about the same said it is almost impossible to fill in Smith’s place as he is the best in the world. The coach seemed confident about his senior member of the team, “He looked really sharp in the nets today. He’ll be hungry. Don’t write off David.”

Even Warner has got the support of his captain, Tim Paine. He said, “With Steve missing this game, I think it might be the little poke and prod Davey needs. He likes that responsibility.” He also opined that Warner comes out ‘swinging’ when he’s back in against the wall. “I’m expecting the very best David Warner.” Paine added, “I’ve spoken a lot about the fact he averages close to 50 in Test cricket and he’s done that over a long period.”

What opponents say

The best part for the 32-year old is that he has support from his teammates and coach. Moreover, even the England coach admitted that Stuart Broad didn’t do anything extraordinary to dominate Warner. “We haven’t allowed him any easy balls to hit for four — you get one or two nicks and sometimes batters can lose a little confidence,” Trevor Bayliss said.

It looks like Warner has nothing to worry about- a good day and he will be back on the headlines as always!
