Virender Sehwag unveil why he didn’t apply for Team India head coach position

Ravi Shastri has been reappointed as Team India head coach a while back. Amid a lot of speculations, Virender Sehwag name was also in the news for the post of the prestigious role. But Sehwag recently revealed why he stayed away from applying for the same.

Why didn’t Viru apply for Head Coach post?

Virender Sehwag was one of the candidates for the role of Head Coach for the Indian team in 2017. When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was looking for a perfect coach in 2017 following Anil Kumble’s resignation, Sehwag was one of the applicants. He was in fact one of the favourites but eventually, Shastri was appointed as the head coach. So this time also a lot expected him to give a tight fight to Shastri and Co. when the board asked for applications. But Viru did not apply this time. Speaking about the same, he informed to Hindustan Times, “In 2017, the BCCI secretary and (late) Dr MV Sridhar (GM Cricket Operations) asked me to apply so I applied. This time no one asked me, so I didn’t apply.”

Kumble, the national selector of Viru

He shared his opinion on who among Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble will make an excellent national selector. The 40-year-old thinks that Kumble has the ability to perform as the perfect national selector. He shared an incident and said, “When Anil Kumble became the captain, he came to my room and said ‘go and play how you play in the next two series as you won’t be dropped’. That kind of confidence he gave, I think he is the right person.”

Sehwag also had his opinions on the board finally coming under the purview of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). He explained, “Indian players have an issue with the whereabouts clause. We have been tested several times both in and out of the competition. I myself had tested during domestic tournaments as well. No current player has commented on it yet… So we have to wait and see.”
