Vengsarkar and More support Rohit’s Test inclusion

India’s recent tour to West Indies has once raised questions over KL Rahul’s inclusion in the squad in presence of Rohit Sharma in the reserve. Like some of the experts, former Indian cricketers Kiran More and Dilip Vengsarkar came up in support of Rohit Sharma to replace Rahul in the team.

Vengsarkar supports Rohit

Dilip Vengsarkar told Mid Day a world-class player like Rohit can adjust at any position. Be it the opening slot or No. 3 or 4, it ultimately depends on the mental state of the cricketer. “To make him bat in the opening position or No. 3 or 4 doesn’t really make much of a difference. It is just about the mental state. It is a good thing that he will be opening; he will get a dedicated slot to bat in.”

Vengsarkar further added Rohit just needs a platform to perform. “He is a world-class player and has proved it. Give him a platform, and he will perform. He delivered when the whole world was watching during his innings [of 140] against Pakistan in the World Cup. He is a big-match player, so I am sure he will succeed,” Vengsarkar said. Sharma’s exclusion from the playing XI did surprise the legendary cricketer after his five centuries in the World Cup.

Support from others

Another former cricketer Kiran More also backed Rohit Sharma and said, “Rohit can be part of the team’s XI anytime. He can bat at any position. He has the experience of opening [in limited overs]. It is a great asset for the Indian team that a player of his calibre is sitting out. It will be great to have him in the XI.”

Chairman of selector MSK Prasad recently has given the idea of Rohit Sharma’s inclusion to the Test team as an opener. However, only the upcoming series against South Africa in October will give the answer to this question.
