T20 World Cup 2020 May Be Held In 2022, Says Source

The pandemic is all set to affect the upcoming men’s T20 World Cup this year. Australia is designated to organize the event in October-November but now the growing scare of the COVID-19 makes the future of the tournament uncertain.

Covid attacking cricket

A huge number of sporting events have already been affected by the novel virus. The cricket world could not escape as well. The BCCI called off the ODI series between India and Australia and then they postponed the date of IPL 2020 to April 15 at least. The reports suggested that IPL might get cancelled this year or be taken to abroad in the month of July-September. Pakistan Cricket Board had to cancel the last leg of the Pakistan Super League. The domestic tournaments along with the international action were called off or postponed by Cricket Australia, England Cricket Board, Cricket South Africa, New Zealand Crciket and others. Now the situation looks dicey for the upcoming T20 World Cup too as the number of cases is increasing day by day.

What they say

The tournament although scheduled to be held in the month of October-November, reports suggest that some stakeholders in the game have proposed to postpone the T20 World Cup to 2022. A source speaking to the Times of India said, “The question being internally discussed was to postpone it but there was no status quo on ‘until when?’ Well, India is scheduled to tour Australia in December. Early next year, Australia have their Big Bash scheduled.”

The source clearly explained the problem of scheduling the World Cup before 2022. “March would not be an ideal time to begin in April because the broadcaster won’t agree to back-to-back T20 events. India is anyways hosting the 2021 T20 World Cup. So, the ideal choice has to be 2022.”
Moreoevr, Australia already closed its international borders until mid-September amid the pandemic. Even if everything gets normal, it will be tough for Australia to organize the tournament in such a short time.
