T20 World Cup 2020: Cricket Australia’s CEO Suggests Two Possible Windows

The ICC meeting which was called to decide the fate of the T20 World Cup ended within two hours. The decision has been deferred to June 10 for the time being. On the other hand, Cricket Australia head Kevin Roberts said that it would be highly risky to organize the even in its scheduled time.

ICC yet to take a final call

On May 28, the ICC officials met on a video conference to take a call on the much talked about men’s T20 World Cup 2020. The showpiece event is still scheduled to be held in Australia in the month of October-November. But the COVID-19 pandemic which has forced everyone to cancel or postpone all ongoing sporting events worldwide may affect the original schedule of the World Cup too. There is no doubt that it will be risky to organize the event amid such pandemic scare. If things start getting normalized, Australia’s lockdown, as of now, is going to end in September. Within the next few days, the host country will have difficulty to arrange the full-fledged event, some believe.

The ICC decided to defer the call until June 10. So, nothing has been finalized yet and all eyes will be again on the International Cricket Council after ten days.

CA sees ‘high risk’ in following the original T20 WC calendar

Meanwhile Speaking to reporters on Friday, Cricket Australia head Kevin Roberts admitted, “Obviously, we’ve been hopeful all along that it could be staged in October-November but you would have to say there is a very high risk about the prospect of that happening.”

In the video call with media, he also suggested two windows for the event, in case it gets postponed eventually. “In the event that that doesn’t happen, there are potential windows in the February-March period, October-November the following year.” He added, “And there’s implications here for the ICC over a number of years. So there’s a lot of complexity for the ICC to deal with.”
