Sunil Gavaskar thinks MS Dhoni’s time is over in international cricket

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar thinks MS Dhoni’s time is up in international cricket. In an interaction with India Today, the batting legend told that Team India should look beyond him now and plan accordingly.

Time is up for Dhoni

Although MS Dhoni has not played for India since the Cricket World Cup 2019 semi-final shocker, his retirement is a trending topic. Dhoni has not commented anything yet on the same but there are speculations over it. Indian batting legend opined on the same line during an interview. He said at the age of 38 Indian team management should look ahead without him. “Nobody knows know what is in MSD’s mind. Only he can clarify what he thinks his future with Indian cricket is. But I think with him being 38 now, India should be looking ahead. Because by the time the next T20 World Cup comes around he will be 39 years old.”

He further discussed how Dhoni’s addition to the side is always fantastic. His overall presence makes things easier for the team and skipper. But with everything in mind, Gavaskar believes it is time for Mahi to bid adieu. “His value to the side is always going to be fantastic. Not just the runs he will score or the stumpings he will effect. But his overall presence on the field will be calming for the captain because the captain gets the benefit of his views. So that is a huge plus. But I do believe the time has come.”

Gavaskar believes Pant

The little master has his veto to the young keeper Rishabh Pant. According to him, “Look, the second year is always tough whether it is batsman or bowler and that’s what he is finding out. People have a better idea about your strengths and weaknesses and therefore the bowlers will bowl accordingly. So I think he is facing second season blues. He has to keep his chin up.”
Reflecting on the increasing criticism around Pant’s way of throwing wickets every time, Gavaskar suggested to be patient with him and the No. 5 batting position for him. “So my suggestion is don’t be too hard on him. Just be patient with him. Having said that having him a slot down the order at no.5 will do him a world of good.”
