In a thrilling Super 4 match of the Asia Cup 2023 between Sri Lanka and India, Sri Lankan bowling all-rounder Dunith Wellalage left cricket fans in awe with a phenomenal catch to dismiss Indian batsman Ishan Kishan. The match, held at the iconic R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, saw India taking on Sri Lanka in a high-stakes encounter. After winning the toss, India decided to bat first, with Rohit Sharma leading from the front with a blazing half-century.
Wellalage’s Magical Spell
Dunith Wellalage’s entry into the bowling attack after the powerplay marked a turning point in the game. He unleashed a sensational spell that sent shockwaves through the Indian batting lineup. What was initially a promising start for India, with the opening partnership of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, quickly turned into a nightmare as Wellalage wreaked havoc.
India, at one stage, was comfortably placed at 80/0. However, Wellalage’s spell saw them tumble to 91/3 in just a matter of a few overs, causing a collapse that rattled the Men in Blue. Ishan Kishan, in particular, adopted a defensive approach as he aimed to stabilize India’s innings. While his partner KL Rahul kept the runs flowing at a decent pace, Kishan found himself in a defensive shell, scoring at a strike rate of 54.10. This cautious approach, though intended to provide stability, eventually led to his downfall.
Wellalage’s Spectacular Catch
In the 35th over of the match, Charith Asalanka, another key player for Sri Lanka, managed to dismiss Kishan and break his defensive stay at the crease. However, it was Dunith Wellalage who played a pivotal role in the dismissal, taking a breathtaking leaping catch that will be etched in the memories of cricket enthusiasts for years to come.
In a moment that left spectators in awe, Wellalage displayed extraordinary athleticism as he leapt high into the air to snatch the ball overhead. The delivery tossed up outside off, tempted Kishan to drive, but he failed to keep the shot down. With the intention of clearing the infield, Kishan’s shot met its match in Wellalage’s exceptional fielding skills.
Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul had managed to build a partnership of 63 runs for the fourth wicket. Their resilience temporarily silenced the Sri Lankan bowlers, but fate had other plans. Within a couple of overs, both batsmen departed, failing to convert their starts into big scores.
Charith Asalanka, not just content with contributing to Kishan’s dismissal, continued to cause further damage to the Indian batting lineup. He scalped four crucial wickets, ensuring that India faced an uphill battle.
As India reached 197/9 in 47 overs, rain interrupted the proceedings, temporarily halting the game. At the time of the interruption, Axar Patel (15*) and Mohammed Siraj (2*) were at the crease, hoping to provide their side with a final push.
