Sri Lanka announce squad for Asia Cup T20; Athapaththu to Lead Sri Lanka

Hosts Sri Lanka have announced their squad for the upcoming Asia Cup T20, naming a strong and familiar 15-woman team. Chamari Athapaththu will captain the side, which features many players who were instrumental in Sri Lanka‘s historic first-ever series win over South Africa in any format earlier this year.

Sri Lanka has placed its faith once again in Vishmi Gunaratne, the 18-year-old opener who demonstrated remarkable maturity during the away tour of South Africa. Joining her is Kavisha Dilhari, the middle-order batter who was also among the runs on that tour, and 26-year-old Harshitha Samarawickrama, whose composed half-century in the third and final T20I sealed the series win for Sri Lanka.

Squad:

  • Chamari Athapaththu (c)
  • Vishmi Gunaratne
  • Harshitha Samarawickrama
  • Hasini Perera
  • Kavisha Dilhari
  • Nilakshi de Silva
  • Anushka Sanjeewani
  • Sugandika Kumari
  • Udeshika Prabodhani
  • Achini Kulasuriya
  • Inoshi Priyadharshani
  • Kawya Kavindi
  • Sachini Nisansala
  • Shashini Gimhani
  • Ama Kanchana

Wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani, left-arm bowler Udeshika Prabodhani, and right-arm pacer Achini Kulasuriya, who were not part of Sri Lanka’s home T20I series against the West Indies but played in the ODI leg, have earned their spots in the Asia Cup squad due to their impressive performances. Although Sri Lanka lost the T20I series to the West Indies, they dominated the ODI leg with a 3-0 win.

Sri Lanka heads into the tournament as one of the favourites, having secured T20I series victories against both England and South Africa away from home in the past year. These accomplishments have bolstered the team’s confidence and positioned them as strong contenders in the Asia Cup.
