Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has given his full support to Vikram Rathour’s appointment as India’s new batting coach. According to the news, while Rathour is set to replace Sanjay Bangar, bowling Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar will retain the posts. Sourav Ganguly calls Vikram Rathour a ‘fantastic guy’
Rathour set to become India’s batting coach
The MSK Prasad-led selection panel recommended Rathour’s name to replace Bangar. But it was a bit strange to a lot as Rathour never managed any senior team. The 50-year-old Rathour, who has played six Tests and seven ODIs in 1996 without much success, was a senior national selector under Sandeep Patil’s chairmanship. Sourav Ganguly was his teammate at the start of their respective Test careers that turned out to be completely opposite. Ganguly came up in support of his colleague from initial days and hoped that Rathour would do well with the Indian senior team.
“I have played with him, our Test match debuts were in the same series. He just made his debut one game ahead of me, and I played with him in the junior levels as well. Fantastic guy, he’s a fantastic gentleman”, said Ganguly.
Ganguly sounds hopeful
Ganguly explained how Rathour worked at the grassroots which would be helpful in his stint with Virat’s team. “He’s worked hard at the grassroots level with Himachal Pradesh. I am the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal and I’ve dealt with him in the last four-five years in sending teams to Himachal when Himachal would come for the Ranji Trophy matches. He’s risen from absolutely the basics of Ranji Trophy and putting the hard yards with Himachal boys so hopefully, he does well, hopefully, all of them along with Bharat, and the fielding coach they can get this team to win bigger medals and bigger trophies because this team has got all the talent.”
