Shubman Gill is having a fantastic run of form in the current IPL 2023, leading Gujarat Titans in run scoring with 339 runs at an average of 37.66 and a 140.66 strike rate. The T20 extravaganza has seen the opener maintain his form in international cricket. Gill was recently criticized by former India batsman Virender Sehwag for his strike rate during the middle overs of the innings during Gujarat’s fourth match of the competition against Punjab Kings.
The opening batsman amassed a score of 67 off 49 balls before being bowled out in the final over with his team needing six runs off the final four balls. Sehwag said the kid should have played it safer and attacked more in the middle of the pitch. The 23-year-old recently agreed with KL Rahul that the strike rate is overrated since a hitter should be able to play under any circumstances.
Gill said
“I think strike-rate does have importance in T20. The more you will score, the more cushion your bowlers will have. Even if you are chasing a higher total, the strike rate does play an important role. But, especially looking at this year, low-scoring games have been difficult in chases. Strike rate is definitely important but it’s a bit over-rated, because, as a batter, you should be able to play in all situations and conditions,” was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
In the first three months of 2023, Gill has had a dream run, scoring hundreds in each of the game’s three formats. The hitter, who was born in Punjab, will play for India in the World Test Championship 2023 final against Australia after the IPL concludes.
Shubman Gill, the Indian opener, had two hundreds in his last four Test matches and is fired up for the big game. Speaking of the summit match, Gill emphasised the significance of giving it your all over the course of the five-day competition. He added that the team’s motivation to win the forthcoming final comes from losing the inaugural World Team Cup against New Zealand.
“I think that is going to be a really important five days for us. We have worked really hard as a team over the last couple of years, having played the last WTC final in Southampton against New Zealand and having that result not go our way, and that is really motivating us. I am really looking forward to go to England and play against Australia,” he added.
