Shane Bond Recalls Heartwarming Bond and Banter with Mumbai Indians' Ishan Kishan

Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has nurtured a deep and special connection with the Mumbai Indians’ cricketing fraternity during his tenure as their bowling coach. One of the players he shares a particularly strong bond with is the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, Ishan Kishan, who has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians‘ lineup for five years.

Unique Bonds of Cricketing Camaraderie

Shane Bond recently revealed a humorous anecdote from his time with the Mumbai Indians, shedding light on the camaraderie among the team members. He shared that MI’s strength and conditioning coach, Paul Chapman, affectionately nicknamed Ishan Kishan with a playful expletive, all in good humour.

“I love Ishan. He is a funny guy. I love the banter I have with him. Chappy (Paul Chapman) called him a d**khead (laughs). If you’re being a d**khead, you’re being a d**khead (laughs). We still call him a d**khead, but it’s out of love. When you spend time with these players, you make good friendships,” said the 48-year-old Bond during an interview on the YouTube channel ‘Wake Up with Sorabh.’

Acknowledging Mumbai Indians’ Scouting System

Beyond the camaraderie, Shane Bond also paid tribute to the Mumbai Indians’ scouting system, which has consistently identified and nurtured talent. He specifically mentioned the stories of Akash Madhwal and Kumar Kartikeya, two young cricketers who started as net bowlers for MI but through their determination and hard work, earned their place in the squad.

“Akash and Kumar Kartikeya were a part of the net bowlers. They got into the squad on the basis of their performances. What I like about those two is their attitude every day. Kumar left home at 16 and only came back when he achieved something. Akash is a smart guy, and both of them have grabbed the opportunity, which shows their mental strength for success,” Bond shared.

A Transition in Coaching Roles

While Shane Bond has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians’ coaching staff, he is set to pass the baton to former Sri Lankan pace ace Lasith Malinga. Malinga will take over as the franchise’s bowling coach, a role he has previously undertaken for the Mumbai Indians’ SA20 franchise, MI Cape Town, in the second edition of the league.

Shane Bond’s heartwarming anecdotes and insights into the Mumbai Indians’ culture offer a glimpse into the close-knit world of cricket, where camaraderie and talent scouting play pivotal roles in the success of a franchise.
