Shabnam Shakil has likely been added to the squad to provide cover or help manage the workload of India’s main pacers. In the first ODI of the ongoing three-match series in Bengaluru, Pooja Vastrakar and Renuka Thakur took on the new-ball responsibilities. Shabnam’s inclusion ensures the team has additional support and flexibility in managing the bowlers’ workload throughout the series.

Pooja Vastrakar was initially a doubtful pick for the ODIs due to a shoulder issue, undergoing rehab at the NCA in Bengaluru. In the second ODI on Wednesday, Renuka Thakur was rested, according to skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. This led to Arundhati Reddy receiving her first ODI cap. Meanwhile, Thakur was observed undergoing a fitness test during the team’s pre-match training, overseen by the team’s Strength and Conditioning coach, Anand Date.

Shabnam Shakil was in Bengaluru until recently, initially participating in a camp exclusively for pace bowlers aimed at selecting players for India’s upcoming series squads. Following this, he joined the Board President’s XI for a warm-up match against the visiting team. Unfortunately, heavy rain intervened during the 50-over contest, allowing only 14 overs of batting for the Board President’s XI before the match had to be abandoned.
