In the wake of ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Kiwi men’s team including the support staff has been sent to self-isolation for next 14 days. The team just returned from Australia after the three-match Chappell Hadlee series was postponed midway. The first match of the series was organized at the Sydney Cricket Ground without any crowd. New Zealand lost the match by 71 runs and was preparing for a comeback. But the increasing number of coronavirus cases the boards decided to call off the series for the time being.

New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Thursday that the team followed the protocol suggested by the Government and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s directive and was sent for self-isolation. The public affairs manager of NZC Richard Boock said: “They (Black Caps players and touring staff) have all gone into self-isolation.” He further added that everyone was educated about the whole process beforehand. “We’ve passed on all the details about what self-isolation means and as far as we know they’re all following it strictly.”

Australia’s tour of New Zealand which was scheduled at the end of this month was also postponed for the pandemic. The teams were set to play three T20Is on March 24, 27, and 29. Due to the novel Covid-19 outbreak, all cricket tournaments were cancelled or postponed until further notice.

New Zealand is not the first team to be sent to self-quarantine. Even South Africa team was also sent for the same after their return from India. They went to India to play three ODIs out of which one was washed out at Dharamshala and the next two were cancelled for the growing threat of coronavirus.
