Sehwag asks CSK bowlers to choose between bowling extras or play without a captain

The bowling department of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been a major concern for the team in IPL 2023. Despite posting huge scores while batting first, the CSK bowlers have not been able to restrict the opposition batters, which has resulted in some close matches for the team. In their recent match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), CSK managed to defend a score of 227, but it was a close affair that went down to the last over.

CSK have been hit hard by injuries to key bowlers such as Deepak Chahar, Mukesh Choudhary, Sisanda Magala, Ben Stokes, and Simarjeet Singh, which has left their seam attack thin. However, the team’s biggest concern has been the lack of discipline and accuracy among its bowlers. The CSK bowlers have been guilty of bowling too many wides and no-balls, which has cost the team dearly. Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag reacted to CSK’s struggles while speaking on Cricbuzz.

What did Sehwag say?

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has expressed concern over the increasing number of wides and no-balls being bowled by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Sehwag’s comments came after CSK captain MS Dhoni was seen visibly upset during their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Monday, which the team won by just 8 runs.

“Dhoni was not looking happy because he has mentioned it before that he wants the bowlers to reduce the number of no-balls and wides. CSK had bowled two-three years of extra and against RCB, they bowled another extra over. It shouldn’t go to a stage where Dhoni gets banned and CSK has to take the field without their captain.”, Sehwag said.

Sehwag also expressed concern over Dhoni’s knee injury and suggested that the captain might have to take a rest if the team’s bowling performance does not improve. CSK has been guilty of bowling too many extra deliveries, which has put pressure on the team and even resulted in slow over rates. If this persists, MS Dhoni could get banned for a few games in the IPL.

“With the kind of knee injury he has, it appears he might play only a handful of matches more anyway. He is constantly pushing himself but if his bowlers are bowling so many wides and no-balls, then Dhoni will have to take rest.”, he further added.
