Rohit Sharma‘s position as the Test captain is being questioned following India’s loss to Australia in the World Test Championship Final by a margin of 209 runs at The Oval. Opting to bowl first after winning the toss proved to be a disastrous decision as the Australian team, led by Pat Cummins, completely dominated the Indian side throughout the match. However, despite concerns about his future, the 36-year-old is expected to continue leading the Indian Test team, which is scheduled to face West Indies in a two-match series starting on July 12.
As per a senior official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rohit’s captaincy in Test matches is not currently in jeopardy. Nevertheless, discussions about his future have already taken place among the selection committee and certain senior officials, given that Rohit will be 38 years old by the time the next World Test Championship cycle concludes. Consequently, the BCCI is open to making a leadership change if Rohit voluntarily steps down or if they identify a more suitable candidate.
“These are baseless stuff that Rohit will be removed from captaincy. Yes, whether he will last the whole two-year WTC cycle is a big question as he would be nearly 38 when the third edition ends in 2025. As of now, I believe that Shiv Sunder Das and his colleagues will have to take a call after the two Tests and looking at his batting form,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
“After West Indies, we have no Tests till December-end when the team travels to South Africa. So there is enough time for selectors to deliberate and take a decision. By then the fifth selector (new chairman) will also join the panel and a decision can be taken,” the source added.
