Rohit Sharma sets a new record during the match against Punjab King

Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, became the first Indian to hit 250 sixes in an IPL 2023 game against the Punjab Kings on Saturday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Rohit Sharma became the third hitter, after Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers, to accomplish the record in his 228th IPL innings. He did so with his third six of the game.

Only Dhoni (272) has more sixes overall in T20s than Rohit (243) as captain. With 182 six-hitters in 140 innings, Rohit also tops the list of men’s T20I players.

The 2013 season saw Rohit hit the most sixes of any season with 28 from 19 innings. The 35-year-old also passed MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli to become just the third IPL captain to hit over 150 sixes with the second six of his innings.

At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, Punjab Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by a score of 13 runs in Match 31 of the IPL 2023. Despite half-centuries from Cameron Green (67) and Suryakumar Yadav (57) in their pursuit of a 215-run goal, MI reached 201/6 in 20 overs. For PBKS’ bowling unit, Arshdeep Singh was in excellent form and claimed four wickets, including two in the penultimate over. Sam Curran’s quick-fire innings of 55 runs off of 29 balls enabled PBKS to reach 214/8 in 20 overs.

Jitesh Sharma and Harpreet Singh Bhatia have contributed significant hits in the meantime. Jitesh hit 25 off 7 balls, and Harpeet hit 41 off 28 balls. For MI’s bowling unit, Arjun Tendulkar, Jason Behrendorff, and Jofra Archer each claimed one dismissal, while Cameron Green and Piyush Chawla each claimed two wickets.

The final over drama

The final over was being bowled by Arshdeep, and the stress is palpable. As David only managed a single to deep cover and Tilak Varma was unable to score on the second ball, he began with a low full toss. The third ball saw Arshdeep dismissing Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera entering as Impact’s replacement for Behrendorff left the pitch without having any impact thanks to Arshdeep’s magnificent yorker, which packed Wadhera out for a duck. With Arshdeep on a hat-trick, Mumbai needed two runs in 15 balls. Although the bowler fell short of a hat-trick, his outstanding four-wicket haul allowed his team to win the game.
