Rohit Sharma or Ajinkya Rahane big Delima for Virat Kohli

With less than two days left for India’s inaugural Test match of World Test Championship, the team management is in dilemma. The team management has to choose between Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane if it has to opt for a fifth specialist bowler.

What’s in store?

India will be returning to the longest format after a seven and a half months. It will be interesting to see which combination the coach-captain duo goes for. If they want to add a sixth batsman or a fifth bowler, that will decide the fate of Test and ODI vice-captains.

If the Indian team’s think tank employs conservative strategy, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal should be opening the innings. Hanuma Vihari although opened innings in presence of Rahul, it didn’t give any good results. But there is still good enough chance of Vihari getting included in the playing eleven because of Rahul’s recent poor past Test records. With Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli batting at No. 3 and 4, Rishabh Pant is expected to be seen at No 6. The all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will add balance at No 7 in the absence of an injured Hardik Pandya. In this care, Kohli may be left with a tough task to keep either Rahane or Rohit out of the final team.

What are the chances?

There is still a chance that Kohli may include both his deputies. In this case, he has to go with the four-bowler strategy. Three pacers- Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Ishant should be included along with Ravichandran Ashwin or Kuldeep Yadav as the only spinner. Then Jadeja will be out of the equation.

But Kohli has always been an advocator of playing five bowlers. He believes it to be a key factor to win Test matches by scalping all 20 wickets of the opponents. A lot will again depend on the track condition at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium as well. But if the skipper doesn’t want to risk World Test Championship opener and take the five bowler option in hand, Rahane will probably miss this Test followed by his wretched form.
