Rohit Sharma Garners Criticism from Netizens After Changing Profile Picture on X

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has recently faced backlash from netizens for allegedly disrespecting the Indian flag. This criticism came after he changed his profile picture on X to a portrait of himself hoisting the Indian flag following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup in Barbados on June 29, where they defeated South Africa in the final.

Earlier this year, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had predicted that under Rohit’s captaincy, Team India would hoist the flag in Barbados, which indeed became a reality. After the victory, Rohit was seen hoisting the Indian flag on the turf at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

On July 8, Rohit updated his X profile picture to commemorate this moment. However, soon after, some netizens accused him of disrespecting the flag because part of it was touching the ground in the picture. This incident was linked to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, which prohibits the desecration of the nation’s symbols, including the flag.

A section of fans took to Twitter to express their displeasure:

“It’s disrespectful for the National flag to touch the ground, floor, or water. Pls switch up your display pic with the flag,” commented one user.

“Please don’t disrespect the Indian flag. It’s touching on ground,” said another netizen.

“The flag should never be allowed to touch the ground. But who will tell you that!!” added another.

Rohit Sharma to Continue in Leadership Role for Upcoming ICC Events

Despite the criticism, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the Indian team in the upcoming ICC events, including the Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship final. In a BCCI video cited by News18, Jay Shah expressed his confidence in Rohit’s leadership:

“I am confident that under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, we will win the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy. This was our third final within a year. On June 11 last year, we lost the WTC final. On November 19 after winning 10 matches, we won hearts but failed to win the ODI World Cup. But as I had said earlier this year in Rajkot, India proceeded to win hearts and the World Cup under Rohit’s leadership.”

Following the T20 World Cup triumph, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game, marking the end of an illustrious T20 career.
