Rohit Sharma on future of cricket

In the show, Cricket Connected Rohit Sharma said that he always focused on the short-term goals and hoped that cricket would be back in the upcoming years. “Over the years, I’ve realised that long term goals won’t help you in anyway, on the contrary it will add to your pressure and stress. I have always focused on short term goals which are mainly the next few games in the upcoming 2-3 months – who is it against, what can I do best.”

The opener of Indian cricket team was asked about the future of IPL 2020 which looks uncertain amid the pandemic. Sharma sounded practical while answering this question. He said that he would see first which tournament he would be play and accordingly strategies for the same. “When we resume playing cricket, we will have to see what’s coming our way – whether it’s T20 World Cup or IPL. We even had a big bilateral series against Australia planned – we will have to analyse and see who we are playing against. Setting goals for each series or tournament helps me a lot and I will continue to follow this method in the future.”

Rohit Sharma on India’s World Cup venture

Since the year 2013, Rohit Sharma started to open the innings for the Indian cricket team and became a mainstay in the top-order soon. But Sharma was disappointed after not being included in the 2011 World Cup team. In eight years, everything changed drastically and the 2019 World Cup saw Sharma hitting five centuries in nine matches. Indians lost the semi-final against New Zealand and Sharma’s contributions in the tournament were not paid. “It was heartbreaking because there is no better feeling than winning a World Cup. It’s never easy to defeat six teams and lift the trophy by winning the final. There’s a unique feeling to winning the World Cup. You might win or lose bi-lateral series but when you win a World Cup, you feel double happy. Likewise, when you lose, it’s equally disappointing. This is the reason why there are so many emotions attached when you talk about the World Cup.”

Sharma believes that that Indian should win at least two of the upcoming World Cups as the team has the potential. “We have the opportunity as there are three World Cups in the near future – two T20 World Cups and one 50-over World Cup. I have said it many time, we should at least win two of those. There will be no complaints if we win all three, but two we should win as we have a good team.”
