Ravichandran Ashwin to lose Kings XI Punjab’s captaincy

Ravichandran Ashwin is reportedly set to lose the captaincy of Kings XI Punjab, A decision is likely to be taken when the officials of the team meet towards the end of this week.

Ashwin through a bad phase

Even after being the country’s premium spinner, Ashwin was ignored in the first Test match against West Indies. Now it seems like his bad time may turn worse. KXIP management is giving a thought of changing the skipper of the team. Moreover, the possibility is that Ashwin maybe not even included in the squad for IPL 2020. Ashwin was picked up by Kings XI Punjab for INR 7.8 crores in the auctions ahead of IPL 2018. Since then he has been leading the franchise for the last two seasons but without much success. So now KXIP is mulling options of trading Ashwin with a couple of IPL franchises – Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals reported the Mirror. Nothing is decided yet and a decision is likely to be taken towards the end of this week.

But the Capitals have a set captain in Shreyas Iyer. He has taken the team to the IPL play-offs for the first time in 7 years as they finished third in IPL 2019. For the Royals, the option between Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith is already a headache.

What’s next?

According to the reports, KXIP captaincy can go to KL Rahul. The franchise is also looking for a new head coach. After the exit of former New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson, they are in talks with the likes of Geroge Bailey and Darren Lehmann.

Ashwin, as a player, although had decent stints with the Punjab based team the inability to take them to play-offs has become a major issue. Fortunately, he will not have any financial losses but he might not get the captaincy status if traded to Delhi Capitals or Rajasthan Royals.
