“Raina’s Numbers could have been better, but…”

Former team India skipper Rahul Dravid shared his thoughts on Suresh Raina who recently retired from international cricket along with Mahendra Singh Dhoni on August 15. Raina’s decision came as a huge shock as nobody expected this and that too just minutes after Dhoni’s call.

Rahul Dravid on Suresh Raina

The 33-year-old Suresh Raina joined his former team India teammate and IPL teammate Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday and announced retirement from international cricket. Raina who has been a mainstay for Chennai Super Kings since long also featured in may important matches for India. His career of 18 Tests, 226 ODIs, and 78 T20Is saw him accumulating a total of 7988 runs, with seven centuries and 48 half-centuries.

Former Indian national cricket team captain and batting legend Rahul Dravid spoke about Suresh Raina in detail in a video posted by the BCCI in their official Twitter handle. Dravid said, “Suresh Raina was one of those really young exciting talents who was through the Indian system in 2004-05. You could see even at that time that Suresh was going to be a very very important player. That’s how it has played out. His contribution, especially in the white-ball game, has been fantastic.” He further added the World Cup and Champions Trophy winner Raina also raised the fielding standards as well with his unmatched enthusiasm.

A terrific teammate

We all know that numbers are not everything and do not reveal the true story always. The limited-overs specialist Suresh Raina gets a beautiful tribute from one of the greatest Indian batsmen when Dravid said, “Honestly, his numbers could have been a lot better but for India, but he batted for most parts at lower down the order, that is shown out in the success that he has had in the IPL for CSK batting at No. 3, but for India, he batted lower down the order, fielded at the difficult position, bowled some very handy overs.”

The 47-year-old National Cricket Academy director added, “He was a terrific teammate, gave his best and was a very very skillful batter. He couldn’t replicate the success of a debut Test hundred but be that as may, his contribution in India’s ODI team was fantastic and was part of a very very successful ODI team over the last decade and a half.”
