Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma played an instrumental role in bringing Rahane back

Ajinkya Rahane has made a surprise comeback to the squad for the World Test Championship final against Australia after being dropped from the team more than 15 months ago. The selectors, led by interim chairman Shiv Sundar Das, had a final round of discussion with captain Rohit Sharma before making the decision.

Shining in the IPL

Rahane’s recent purple patch in the Indian Premier League (IPL) was a factor in his selection, but sources suggest that the team management and selectors were considering him due to his experience and the lack of options in the middle order.

Discussions about Ajinkya Rahane’s potential inclusion in the Indian cricket team for the World Test Championship final began soon after it was discovered that Shreyas Iyer, who is currently recovering from shoulder surgery in the UK, would not be available. The selectors also took into account KL Rahul‘s recent poor form, which added weight to the idea of bringing Rahane back into the squad.

Additionally, the selectors were hesitant to try out a new player in the WTC final, as Suryakumar Yadav had not made a strong impression in the lone Test against Australia and lacked experience in English conditions. Rajat Patidar was also a contender for selection but is currently sidelined with a heel injury.

Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma both wanted Rahane

As reported by The Telegraph, both head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma were very keen on bringing Ajinkya Rahane back into the Indian cricket team for the World Test Championship final due to his vast experience. It’s worth noting that the same team management had previously kept Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara out of the Test side in an attempt to promote young talent.

However, Rahane’s record in England is not particularly impressive, with 729 runs in 15 Test matches at an average of 26.04. His performance at The Oval is even worse, with only 55 runs in six innings, including three ducks. Nevertheless, fans and the Indian team management have high hopes that Rahane will be instrumental in helping India bring home the WTC trophy for the first time ever.
