Purple Cap Holder of IPL 2023: Updated After MI vs PBKS Match 31

The day saw two of the most intense games in the season. In the first game, Gujarat Titans defended a low total of 135 runs in a game that went till the very last over. In the second game, Punjab thrashed Mumbai Indians by 13 runs in a game that saw 415 runs being made. However, after today’s doubleheader, there’s a new leader in the Purple Cap list.

Arshdeep rises to the top

India and Punjab Kings’ aggressive left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is now the bearer of the prestigious Purple Cap. Arshdeep has 13 scalps in 7 games to his name, making him the highest wicket-taker of the season so far. Arshdeep had an amazing outing against the Mumbai Indians tonight as he completely bolstered the Mumbai Indians’ batting attack, picking up his second-best career figures of 4 for 29.

2 of these 4 wickets came while defending 16 runs in the final over against the likes of Tilak Varma and Tim David. Arshdeep cleaned up Tilak and Nehal Wadhera off consecutive balls, breaking off their middle stumps to exfoliate any chances Mumbai had of winning. Not only that, the left-arm pacer gave just 2 runs in the final over, making his figures even more impressive.

Chawla and Rashid pick turning the tides

When the season started, everyone expected the Mumbai Indians to be weak in the spin department. However, time and again this season, Piyush Chawla has been putting all concerns away. Chawla is not only MI’s leading spinner this season but also their highest wicket-taker so far. He has bagged 9 wickets in 6 games at an economy rate of just 6.86 runs per over and is currently in the 9th spot on the Purple Cap list. Even during today’s game, while all other MI bowlers were being smashed to all parts of the ground, Chawla kept his nerves tight as he finished with figures of 2 for 15 in 3 overs.

On the other hand, Rashid Khan has been steadily making his way up in the Purple Cap list. After his outing against the Lucknow Super Giants today, Rashid has moved up to the 3rd spot in the list, with 12 wickets to his name in 6 games. Mohammed Siraj is on the 2nd, while Mark Wood has slipped down to the 4th because of missing out on consecutive games.
