Purple Cap Holder of IPL 2023: Updated after CSK vs GT Qualifier 1

In a thrilling contest filled with several twists and turns, the Chennai Super Kings defeated the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2023 to enter the final for a record 10th time. Since it was a difficult track to bat on at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai, a lot of bowlers emerged at the top of their games and made several changes in the IPL 2023 Purple Cap race.

Shami-Rashid continue their domination

The duo of Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan has continued its domination in the IPL 2023 Purple Cap race. While Mohammed Shami holds the top position with 26 wickets, Rashid is just one step behind him with 25 wickets. Both bowlers have been pivotal in GT’s success this season and have delivered whenever the team has needed them to.

Even in today’s game, the duo shared 3 wickets between them. However, Shami had a better outing as compared to Rashid. In his 4 overs, Shami gave away just 28 runs and claimed 2 important wickets of Devon Conway and Ravindra Jadeja. On the other hand, Rashid’s outing was rather mediocre as he was smashed for 37 runs in his 4 overs and could only pick up one wicket. Nonetheless, both bowlers hold strong positions in the IPL 2023 Purple Cap race and the only competition they currently have is each other.

Another GT bowler that has managed to climb the ranks is right-arm pacer, Mohit Sharma. This year has served as a redemption for Mohit Sharma, who has claimed 19 wickets in just 12 games. Even in the qualifier against the Chennai Super Kings, Sharma impressed with his skills as he picked up 2 wickets for just 31 runs. He is currently placed in the 9th place in the IPL 2023 Purple Cap race.

Jadeja-Pathirana rise in ranks

CSK’s and MS Dhoni’s most reliable soldier Ravindra Jadeja has continued to bamboozle the batters with his spin this season. The left-arm orthodox spinner has 19 scalps in 15 games and is currently placed in the 7th position of the IPL 2023 Purple Cap race. He had a successful outing in the first qualifier against the Gujarat Titans as he picked 2 wickets for just 18 runs in 4 overs, playing a huge role in CSK’s victory over GT. This included a magical delivery to David Miller, who was stunned as he lost his wicket.

A surprise entry in the IPL 2023 Purple Cap race has been CSK’s pacer Matheesha Pathirana. The Sri Lankan pacer began his campaign a little late but has been very quick to catch up. Dhoni’s trusted trooper for the death overs this season, Pathirana has claimed 17 wickets in 11 games at an economy rate of 7.72. Known for his ‘Malinga-like’ slinging action and the same ability to bowl toe-crushing yorkers, Pathirana has impressed everyone with his pace and wicket-taking ability. He picked up 2 wickets in his latest outing against the Gujarat Titans, this propelling him to the 10th place in the IPL 2023 Purple Cap race.

Tushar Deshpande also picked up a wicket and is currently placed in the 4th position with 21 wickets in 15 games. He has brought his economy a little down as well. It is interesting to note that he is the only uncapped player in the top 5 wicket-takers this season.
