The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the relocation of the second Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh from Karachi to Rawalpindi. This significant development comes in light of ongoing construction work at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, which is being renovated in preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled for next year.

Reasons for the Venue Change

Initially, the second Test was planned to take place in Karachi from August 30 to September 3, following the first Test in Rawalpindi starting on August 21. However, as renovations progressed, the PCB faced challenges that prompted a reassessment of the venue. The PCB had already decided to hold the match behind closed doors due to the ongoing work, but construction experts advised that the noise and dust generated during construction could significantly disrupt the players’ performance.

“Due to the deployment of heavy construction equipment and the need to adhere to tight redevelopment schedules for the National Bank Stadium, which is being prepared for next year’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the PCB, in consultation with the Bangladesh Cricket Board, has decided to move the second ICC World Test Championship fixture to Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium,” the PCB stated.

Health and Safety Concerns

The PCB emphasized that the health and well-being of players, officials, broadcasters, and media personnel were paramount. The ongoing construction could lead to noise pollution and dust, which would not only distract players but also pose health risks. “The dust from the construction work could also affect the health and well-being of the players, officials, broadcasters, and media,” the PCB’s statement continued.

This proactive approach demonstrates the PCB’s commitment to ensuring a safe and conducive playing environment while also prioritizing the timely completion of renovations for the Champions Trophy.

Looking ahead, Karachi is also set to host a Test match against England from October 15 to 19. The PCB has stated that it will continue to collaborate closely with architects and construction experts to ensure the safe hosting of this match. “At this stage, we will not like to speculate on the hosting of the second Test in Karachi from 15-19 October and will continue to work closely with the architects and construction experts on the safe and secure hosting of the match,” the PCB added.
