“New Zealand should have sent a full team”: Abdul Razzaq

Most of the New Zealand players are featuring in the Indian Premier League 2023 despite of an international tour against Pakistan. Players including Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson, and Kane Williamson are part of the marquee tournament.

Before the T20I series against Pakistan began on Friday, former Pakistan cricket team all-rounder Abdul Razzaq raised concern about the lack of balance in the visiting New Zealand team. A handful of the Kiwi players have been disqualified owing to fitness concerns, while others are now in India for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL).

In a recent conversation, Razzaq stated that a cricketer’s primary focus should be the national team and questioned how they were able to obtain No-Objection Certificates (NOC).

There is not much interest in the series: Razzaq

“New Zealand should have sent a full team. Some players have gone to the IPL and some are unfit. There is not much interest in the series. In the Test series, they had a full team and there were some exciting matches. Seems like they have just sent a team depending on the situation. I have no idea how the players get a NOC when it comes to the national team. What the criteria is for the NOCs because the first priority should always be the national side,” Razzaq told Geo News.

Shaheen Afridi‘s return, who will play for the first time since the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final against England in November 2022, has helped Pakistan pick a star-studded T20I side.

Shaheen Afridi was absent from international cricket for four months, but since then he has been active in Pakistan, where he has been busy winning awards and setting records. The legendary pacer led Lahore Qalandars to victory in the most recent Pakistan Super League, earning him the first skipper to double as PSL champion.

Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, and captain Babar Azam have all rejoined the team after missing the Afghanistan T20I series in Sharjah. After being much missed in their recent T20I matches, Pakistan would be glad to have their star players back in action.

Pakistan are leading the series 1-0. Babar Azam scored an unbeaten century in the second T20. The home team is looking strong to keep their lead in the series.
