The upcoming World Cup has stirred up an unusual scenario, highlighting the stark financial inequality and resource divide among its participating nations. The Netherlands cricket team, often considered the underdog among the ten contenders, has taken an unconventional route to bridge this gap. In a first-of-its-kind move, they have turned to the cricket-loving nation of India for net bowlers to aid in their preparations for the mega event.

Seeking assistance on Social Media

The Dutch cricket board recently caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts by posting an advertisement on the social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). In their plea for assistance, they have requested the services of one left-arm seamer, one right-arm seamer, a mystery spinner, and a left-arm spinner. These net bowlers are intended to join the Netherlands squad during their five-day pre-World Cup camp in Alur, scheduled from September 20th to 24th.

While it is a convention for local state associations to provide net bowlers for visiting teams, the Netherlands cricket team has faced unique challenges. Their earlier acclimatization camp in Bengaluru, India, revealed that unlike some of the more resource-rich teams, including host nation India, the Netherlands lacks the depth in domestic cricket and resources to have traveling net bowlers accompany the squad.

Demanding Criteria for Net Bowlers

The Netherlands’ criteria for net bowlers showcase the team’s determination to make the most of their preparations. The pacers are expected to deliver at speeds exceeding 120 kmph (75 miles per hour), while spinners are required to generate a minimum of 80 kmph (50 miles per hour).

Aspiring net bowlers must submit videos of themselves bowling at least one over, with a clear trajectory of their deliveries visible. The Royal Netherlands Cricket Association has assured to cover their travel, stay, and meals during the camp.

Support from BCCI

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has shown its readiness to assist the Netherlands team in their quest for quality net bowlers. A senior KSCA official stated that they have already provided the required facilities during the Dutch team’s previous camp and are prepared to host them again. They pledge to offer the best possible ground and net bowlers while allowing the Dutch team to rope in additional support.

A BCCI official, knowledgeable about the situation, explained that the unique advertisement stems from the Netherlands team’s limited contacts in this part of the world. Established teams like England and Australia have cultivated relationships with BCCI bodies over the years, enabling them to access quality net bowlers.
