Navdeep Saini found guilty of breaching ICC’s Code of Conduct

The young newcomer of Indian cricket team Navdeep Saini is in trouble. The fast-bowler Navdeep Saini was found to have breached an ICC Code of Conduct and has been handed over a demerit point.

The Story

Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel basically relates to doing actions or gestures that might provoke the batter to react aggressively. The incident saw Navdeep doing same during the 4th over of the West Indies’ innings after taking the wicket of Nicholas Pooran as he gave him an animated send-off.

Navdeep admitted the same and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees. Hence there was no need for a formal hearing and the player has received one demerit point according to ICC Regulations. On-field umpires appointed for the match Nigel Duguid and Gregory Braithwaite, third umpire Leslie Reifer, and fourth official Patrick Gustard levelled the charges.

The Rules:

1) When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned

2) Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player

3) Demerit Points to remain on a Player or Player Support Personnel’s disciplinary record for a period of twenty-four (24) months from their imposition.

The 26-year-old emerged as one of the brightest faces in the Twenty 20 series between India and West Indies. He finished with impressive figures of three for 17 runs in the first T20I and the Caribbean side was restricted to a mere score of 95 for nine in. Indian team, in reply, chased down the score with 2.5 overs to spare and took a 1-0 lead.
