MS Dhoni has the Right to Leave the Game on his own: Gary Kirsten

Indian cricket team’s former coach Gary Kirsten believes that one of the greatest cricketers of the modern era, Mahendra Singh Dhoni can leave the game on his own terms. No one should dictate him about his timing.

Dhoni’s comeback doubtful

Since India’s exit from World Cup in 2019 in the semi-final against New Zealand, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been out of action for months. He was all set to make a comeback during the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League which was postponed due to the pandemic. With no certain news of the IPL 2020, no wonder people keep talking about his comeback and retirement from international cricket. While a lot thinks Dhoni should retire from international cricket, a lot of experts have faith in his calibre. Most of them believe that Dhoni is the best person to judge his timing.

Former Indian cricket team coach Gary Kirsten who was the coach of India’s World Cup-winning team in 2011 saw Dhoni closely. Dhoni and Kirsten helped the team touch the Cup that was out of reach for Indians for 28 long years. Kirsten, in a chat with Times of India, opined that Dhoni has the right to leave the game on his own.

No one should dictate Dhoni

Kirsten describe the ‘incredible’ Dhoni and said, “MS (Dhoni) is an incredible cricketer. Intelligence, calmness, power, athleticism, speed and a match-winner separate him from others and puts him amongst the greatest sportsmen in the modern era.” He further added, “He (Dhoni) has earned the right to leave the game on his own terms and no one should dictate to him when that time is.”

Kirsten who erstwhile represented South Africa in their national squad was asked to rate two roles. He said, “Playing was more challenging. I loved coaching the Indian team. It was one of the great privileges of my life.”
