Michael Bracewell's World Cup Dreams Shattered as Achilles Injury Forces Lengthy Layoff

In a devastating blow to New Zealand cricket, the versatile spin-bowling allrounder, Michael Bracewell, faces a grueling six to eight months on the sidelines after rupturing his right Achilles tendon during a high-stakes T20 Blast match for Worcestershire. The injury occurred during a valiant batting effort against Yorkshire in the County Championship, abruptly ending Bracewell’s innings on 11 as he collapsed mid-pitch, clutching his right leg in anguish.

Surgery in UK

The forthcoming surgical procedure, scheduled to take place in the United Kingdom on Thursday, marks the beginning of a long and arduous rehabilitation journey for Bracewell, effectively ruling him out of the highly anticipated 50-over World Cup in India, set to take place in October-November.

Expressing his sympathy for the talented cricketer, New Zealand’s Head Coach, Gary Stead, emphasized the disappointment of losing Bracewell’s invaluable presence on the international stage. Stead commended Bracewell’s exemplary commitment to the team, highlighting his exceptional skills across all aspects of the game. The spin-bowling allrounder’s absence leaves a notable void in New Zealand’s World Cup campaign, as he had emerged as a pivotal player within the squad.

A huge loss for New Zealand

Bracewell, 32, has exhibited equal proficiency with both bat and ball throughout his career, amassing eight Test appearances, 19 ODIs, and 16 T20Is since his international debut last year. His recent stint in the Indian Premier League for the Royal Challengers Bangalore showcased his adaptability, securing six wickets in five matches as a replacement for Will Jacks. As part of a distinguished cricketing family, including his uncle John and cousin Doug, Bracewell’s remarkable performances during New Zealand’s tour of Europe in 2022 propelled him into the spotlight.

A standout moment came during his team’s tour of India, where he played a scintillating innings of 140 runs off just 77 deliveries, rescuing the side from a precarious position of 131 for 6. New Zealand recognized his contributions, bestowing upon him the coveted title of ODI Player of the Year for his ability to provide quick runs in the middle-order and contribute effectively with his off spin bowling.

Away from New Zealand since April

Trapped away from his home country since April due to his IPL commitments, Bracewell’s recovery will further delay his much-awaited return to New Zealand. As he braces himself for an extended period away from the game, the resilient cricketer remains focused on his rehabilitation, acknowledging the inevitable setbacks that come with being a sportsperson.

In light of Bracewell’s absence, New Zealand Cricket has announced two winter training camps, scheduled to be held at Lincoln and Tauranga from July 26 to 28 and August 9 to 11, respectively. These camps aim to provide an opportunity for the national team to regroup and strategize for the challenges ahead, seeking alternative options to compensate for the void left by Bracewell’s absence.

The cricketing fraternity stands in solidarity with Michael Bracewell, extending their wishes for a swift and complete recovery.
