Iyer hits maiden ODI ton

Shreyas Iyer has taken 16 ODIs to record his first 50-over hundred while his previous best was 88 which he got against Sri Lanka in 2017. Iyer walked in to join captain Kohli when the team was in a bit problem in the 9th over of the innings with 54/2 on board. He anchored the innings and got involved in a 100-plus stand with Virat Kohli for the third wicket. In the process, he registered his first ODI century in 101 balls that included 11 fours and one maximum to reach his hundred in the 43rd over.

Captain Virat Kohli along with the rest of the dressing room started applauding the middle-order youngster just after his brilliant knock. Although Iyer was dropped thrice on 8,12 and 83 but he proved his class throughout. Indians are playing the series without Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma which made them bring their new opening duo for the series-Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw.

Twitter started to celebrate Iyer as soon as he reached the feat. People started talking about how effective Iyer is as the No. 4 batsman for India in ODI. Harsha Bhogle opined, “ India’s no 4 scores a century. We have waited a while to hear that! #ShreyasIyer”

An expert wrote, “#ShreyasIyer becomes the 1st No. 4 batsman to hit a 💯 for #India in ODIs since Ambati Rayudu in October 2018 and only the 4th batsman since 2015! Tells you what @VVSLaxman281has been saying all along. India want him to succeed at that position & they are not wrong! #NZvIND”
