Kerala’s Football Landscape Gets a Boost: Samson Takes the Helm

Celebrated Indian cricketer Sanju Samson has ventured into the world of football as a co-owner of Malappuram FC, a team in the Kerala Super League.

Sanju Samson Becomes Co Owner of Kerala Club Malappuram FC

Following several days of conjecture, Sanju Samson has assumed joint ownership of Malappuram FC, a Kerala Super League team. On Monday, September 9, the club announced the news with an official Instagram post in partnership with the keeper-batter.

Sanju Samson has been connected to a rumored minority investment in the club since last week. With the official confirmation, the keeper-batter’s supporters would be overjoyed to see him team up with fellow co-owners of a football club, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Sourav Ganguly, among other players.

Malappuram FC is already co-owned by Dr. Anvar Ameen Chelat of SAT Tirur FC and Grand Hypermarkets, Baby Neelambra, President of the Saudi Indian Football Forum, and VA Ajmal Bismi, MD of the Bismi Group.

After the I-League’s Gokulam Kerala FC, Malappuram FC is the second professional football team to emerge from the district.

This season, Malappuram made their Super League Kerala debut. At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Saturday, September 7, they defeated Forca Kochi FC 2-0 to start their winning streak.

Sanju’s Performance This Year 

The 29-year-old was last seen in international action during India‘s tour to Sri Lanka in July 2024. In both T20I appearances, Samson was dismissed for a duck and could not make his chances count.

Prior to the Sri Lanka series, Sanju Samson scored 70 runs in two Twenty20 International innings against Zimbabwe. Earlier, he helped the Rajasthan Royals make the playoffs and had his best-ever IPL season, scoring 531 runs in 16 innings.At first, Samson was not considered for the Duleep Trophy, which inaugurated the 2023–24 Indian domestic season. But after Ishan Kishan had a groin injury, he was called up to the India D team to replace the latter.
