Josh Hazlewood out of BGT, Warner Doubtful

Josh Hazlewood is all set to return home after being ruled out of the Border-Gavaskar series following an Achilles injury. The Australia quick will start rehabilitation after flying back as confirmed by the Australia coach Andrew McDonald.

Hazlewood out from BGT series

“Hazlewood has been ramping up his bowling at training in recent weeks but hasn’t been able to shake the injury and will instead continue his recovery at home in Sydney,” McDonald told reporters. Josh Hazlewood was unavailable for the first two Tests against India due to Achilles tendonitis. In the first match in Nagpur he was replaced by Scott Boland in the first Test while Australia decided to go with three spinners and just one pace bowler in the second Test in Delhi.

Warner’s injury concerns Aussies

Meanwhile, David Warner also suffered a hairline fracture in his left elbow during the Delhi Test. The coach informed that Warner will be closely monitored in the upcoming days. “[Warner]’s still sore at the moment. We had a meeting just before discussing through this. We’re in no rush to make any decisions at this point in time around Davey. Just seeing how that settles, how functional that is.”
He further added, “It will be basically how sore and how functional it is as to what decision we make with him and then the length of the injury. There’s some talk the length of injury could be anywhere between a week plus depending how that settles down. There’s a bit of unknown there. I’ll leave that to the medical team and they’ll inform me once they know.”

While there are still concerns over Warner’s fitness, Australia still have quite a few days to monitor the opener. If Warner misses the match, Travis Head would open the batting for Australia. McDonald said. “We did discuss before coming over here that if we were to lose an opening batter Trav would be one we’d look to put up there. We feel in the subcontinental conditions that he can get off to the fast starts which he showed.”

He concluded, “We don’t see [Head] as an opener in all conditions, more subcontinental and in other conditions back to the middle order.”
