Ireland’s Upcoming Tour Of Zimbabwe Postponed

Ireland’s tour of Zimbabwe scheduled to begin early next month has been postponed. Amid the increasing number of coronavirus pandemic around the glove, the decision was taken after a discussion between two boards.

What Zimbabwe Cricket thinks?

Ireland were scheduled to play three T20Is and three ODIs in Zimbabwe starting from April 2, 2020. But the current situation forced the boards to delay the tour for the being until everything comes under control. They will now have a new date for a tour as stated by the Acting Managing Director of Zimbabwe Cricket. Givemore Makoni speaking on the same called this as a case of a public health emergency. “We were looking forward to hosting Ireland in Bulawayo next month, but with the world in the throes of a public health emergency on a scale not witnessed in over a century, postponing the tour was the only reasonable decision.”

He further added that this was a mutual taken decision and they would try to reschedule the tour later depending on the conditions. “Indeed, the mutually agreed decision to postpone the series is the right thing to do, given the worsening Coronavirus pandemic and the overwhelming priority to safeguard the players, fans and the entire cricket community. We are looking to reschedule the tour once the pandemic has been brought under control.”

On the other hand, Ireland Cricket’s Chief Executive Warren Deutrom echoed the same thought. He explained, “This is the only reasonable decision in the circumstances, as we all play our part in containing the spread of COVID-19. We have taken the advice of Irish and British governments, as well as relevant health and sports bodies, and will take a safety-first approach to our operations over the coming weeks and months.

He further mentioned that it is also about the social circles that the boards are concerned of. The decision was taken based on that. “We pass on our thanks to Givemore and all of Zimbabwe Cricket for so readily agreeing with this position, and we shall work with Zimbabwe Cricket to seek a new date for the tour when we are all in a position to plan for the future with greater certainty.”
