IPL Points Table 2023: Updated After MI vs RR Match 42

PBKS breach the Chepauk fortress

In a nail-biting last-ball finish, the Punjab Kings defeated the Chennai Super Kings by four wickets, stunning the Chepauk crowd that had expected their team to come out victorious. Despite some impressive performances by the Super Kings, such as Devon Conway’s unbeaten 92 and MS Dhoni‘s two sixes that took their total to 200, they were unable to prevent the Kings from snatching victory from them.

During the middle overs of the match, Chennai Super Kings had been able to stifle Punjab Kings’ chase but ultimately lost despite being ahead for most of the final over, thanks to the impressive accuracy of Matheesha Pathirana. With nine runs required off the final over, Sikandar Raza and Shahrukh Khan struggled to find the boundary against Pathirana’s dipping deliveries. They managed a single, a leg bye, a dot ball, and two twos, but still needed three runs off the last ball to win.

On the final ball, Raza shuffled across the crease and pulled a short-of-length slower ball over square leg, landing it in between the deep fine leg and deep midwicket to secure three runs and seal victory for the Punjab Kings. With this win, the Punjab Kings secured two points and moved to fifth place on the table with 10 points, just behind the Super Kings, who are in the 4th spot with the same number of points.

MI commemorate a day of chases

A special commemorative IPL match that was meant to honor the past instead became a stage for Yashasvi Jaiswal to showcase the promise of the future. Jaiswal, representing the Rajasthan Royals against his hometown franchise Mumbai Indians, produced a truly spectacular century that seemed destined to carry his team to victory for over 35 overs of the game.

Yet, in the unpredictable realm of T20 cricket, the match was ultimately swayed by a player who spent only a fraction of the time on the field compared to Jaiswal. That player was Tim David, who, with just 14 deliveries, managed to turn the tide of the game, leading his team to a historic victory. The Wankhede Stadium witnessed its first-ever chase of a 200-plus total in the IPL, with David’s heroics proving to be the difference.

In the final over, it was David who snatched the spotlight, hammering three consecutive sixes off back-to-back full tosses from Jaeson Holder. This spectacular feat was a testament to the extraordinary entertainment value that the IPL has to offer, as it celebrated its 1000th match in style. The IPL’s penchant for delivering breathtaking moments never ceases to amaze, leaving fans in awe of the sheer brilliance of its players.

After winning tonight’s encounter, Mumbai have moved up by 2 spots and are now seated in the 7th spot in the Points Table. They have 4 wins in 8 games and have accumulated 8 points. However, Rajasthan Royals have dropped down by one spot, and are in the 3rd spot after tonight’s defeat. They have the same number of points as LSG, who moved up because RR’s Net Run Rate (NRR) dropped after the defeat.
